What is a QR Code?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores data in a matrix of black and white squares. Invented in 1994 by Denso Wave for tracking automotive parts, QR codes have evolved into one of the most widely used digital tools in the world — connecting physical objects to digital experiences with a simple scan from any smartphone camera.

Unlike traditional one-dimensional barcodes that store data only in horizontal lines, QR codes store data in both horizontal and vertical directions. This allows them to hold significantly more information — up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters — while remaining compact enough to fit on a business card or product label.

Modern smartphones (iOS 11+ and Android 10+) include built-in QR code readers in their camera apps, so no additional software is needed. QR codes also include built-in error correction that allows them to be scanned even when up to 30% of the code is damaged, dirty, or obscured.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is QR Code Builder completely free?
Yes, QR Code Builder is 100% free with no hidden fees, premium tiers, or sign-up requirements. You can create unlimited QR codes with full customization, download in PNG or SVG, and use them for any purpose. The service is supported by non-intrusive advertising.
What types of QR codes can I create?
QR Builder supports 8 types: URL (website links), Plain Text, WiFi (network credentials), vCard (contact cards), Email (with subject and body), Phone numbers, SMS messages, and Geographic locations. Each type has dedicated input fields optimized for that data format.
Will my QR codes expire?
No. Static QR codes generated by QR Builder never expire and have no scan limits. The data is encoded directly in the QR pattern, so the code works permanently as long as the linked content (such as a website URL) remains active.
Can I use QR codes for commercial purposes?
Absolutely. All QR codes generated with QR Builder are free for both personal and commercial use — business cards, product packaging, marketing materials, restaurant menus, event tickets, and any other application.
What file formats and sizes are available?
Download in PNG (for digital use and printing) or SVG (vector format for unlimited scaling). Available sizes range from 256x256 to 4096x4096 pixels. SVG is recommended for large-format printing like posters and banners.
How do I ensure my QR code scans reliably?
Use high contrast between foreground and background colors, size the code at least 1/10th of the expected scanning distance, maintain the white margin (quiet zone) around the code, and always test with multiple devices before printing. QR Builder uses Level H error correction by default for maximum reliability.
